Why Pennsylvania agents stay busy

For 2027 coverage, Pennsylvania runs its own exchange, Pennie, instead of HealthCare.gov. Agents who sell its plans register with Pennie too. Agents also complete Pennie's broker certification training each year.

The median annual wage for insurance sales agents in Pennsylvania was $73,370 in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That figure covers every kind of insurance agent and employer in the state, so read it as a picture of the local market, not as pay at My Live Health. Our pay is commission, paid every week.

About 6% of Pennsylvania residents speak Spanish at home (Census Bureau ACS 2024 1-year, table C16001).

How to get licensed in Pennsylvania

The Pennsylvania Insurance Department licenses insurance agents in Pennsylvania. Here is the path to a resident license that covers health insurance, then the steps to sell Medicare and ACA plans.

  1. Resident license

    Get the right license line

In Pennsylvania, the resident license that lets you sell health insurance is Accident & Health or Sickness. The Pennsylvania Insurance Department issues it.

  2. Not required

    No pre-licensing course required

Pennsylvania does not require a pre-licensing course for this license. Act 142 of 2024 removed the pre-exam education rule.

  3. PSI

    Pass the state exam

In Pennsylvania, insurance licensing exams are run by PSI. You schedule your health line exam with them.

  4. Required

    Get fingerprinted

Pennsylvania requires fingerprints for a background check at an IdentoGO center, only after you pass the exam and apply.

  5. Apply for your license

Apply for your Pennsylvania resident license through Sircon or NIPR. You receive your National Producer Number (NPN), a unique ID that follows you to every state, during the application process.

  6. Every plan year

    Certify for Medicare

To sell Medicare Advantage and Part D plans with us, complete the AHIP Medicare + Fraud, Waste, and Abuse course for the current plan year (AHIP updates it every year), plus each carrier's certification.

  7. Every plan year

Register with CMS for ACA plans

Complete Marketplace registration and training with CMS each plan year through the Marketplace Learning Management System (MLMS). You need this for HealthCare.gov states, which you reach with non-resident licenses. CMS ties Marketplace access to the health line of authority on your resident license, so your Pennsylvania license comes first.

  8. State exchange

    Register with Pennie

For 2027 coverage, Pennsylvania runs its own exchange, Pennie, instead of HealthCare.gov. Agents register with Pennie as well. Agents also complete Pennie's broker certification training each year.

  9. Keep your license active

To renew, Pennsylvania requires 24 credit hours of continuing education every 2 years, including 3 credits of ethics.

Also good to know in Pennsylvania: You must apply within one year of passing the exam, and the resident application fee is $55.
