Why New Jersey agents stay busy

For 2027 coverage, New Jersey runs its own exchange, GetCoveredNJ, instead of HealthCare.gov. Agents who sell its plans register with GetCoveredNJ too. Agents also complete GetCoveredNJ training before each open enrollment.

The median annual wage for insurance sales agents in New Jersey was $81,640 in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That figure covers every kind of insurance agent and employer in the state, so read it as a picture of the local market, not as pay at My Live Health. Our pay is commission, paid every week.

How to get licensed in New Jersey

The New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance licenses insurance agents in New Jersey. Here is the path to a resident license that covers health insurance, then the steps to sell Medicare and ACA plans.

  1. Resident license

    Get the right license line

In New Jersey, the resident license that lets you sell health insurance is Accident & Health or Sickness (Health). The New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance issues it.

  2. 20 hours

    Complete pre-licensing education

New Jersey requires 20 hours of pre-licensing education for Health, or 40 hours for combined Life and Health, from an approved provider.

  3. PSI

    Pass the state exam

In New Jersey, insurance licensing exams are run by PSI. You schedule your health line exam with them.

  4. Required

    Get fingerprinted

New Jersey requires fingerprints for a background check before you apply: Live Scan electronic prints through IdentoGO (IDEMIA).

  5. Apply for your license

Apply for your New Jersey resident license through NIPR. You receive your National Producer Number (NPN), a unique ID that follows you to every state, during the application process.

  6. Every plan year

    Certify for Medicare

To sell Medicare Advantage and Part D plans with us, complete the AHIP Medicare + Fraud, Waste, and Abuse course for the current plan year (AHIP updates it every year), plus each carrier's certification.

  7. Every plan year

Register with CMS for ACA plans

Complete Marketplace registration and training with CMS each plan year through the Marketplace Learning Management System (MLMS). You need this for HealthCare.gov states, which you reach with non-resident licenses. CMS ties Marketplace access to the health line of authority on your resident license, so your New Jersey license comes first.

  8. State exchange

    Register with GetCoveredNJ

For 2027 coverage, New Jersey runs its own exchange, GetCoveredNJ, instead of HealthCare.gov. Agents register with GetCoveredNJ as well. Agents also complete GetCoveredNJ training before each open enrollment.

  9. Keep your license active

To renew, New Jersey requires continuing education: 24 credits every 2 years, including 3 in ethics.

Also good to know in New Jersey: A major line license costs $150 for 2 years, plus a $20 new application fee.
