How to get licensed in Ohio

The Ohio Department of Insurance licenses insurance agents in Ohio. Here is the path to a resident license that covers health insurance, then the steps to sell Medicare and ACA plans.

  1. Resident license

    Get the right license line

In Ohio, the resident license that lets you sell health insurance is Accident & Health. The Ohio Department of Insurance issues it.

  2. 20 hours

    Complete pre-licensing education

Ohio requires 20 hours of pre-licensing education for Accident and Health from an Ohio-approved provider (20 more for each added line, such as Life).

  3. PSI

    Pass the state exam

In Ohio, insurance licensing exams are run by PSI. You schedule your health line exam with them.

  4. Required

    Get fingerprinted

Ohio requires fingerprints for a background check. BCI and FBI background check through a National WebCheck vendor.

  5. Apply for your license

Apply for your Ohio resident license through NIPR. You receive your National Producer Number (NPN), a unique ID that follows you to every state, during the application process.

  6. Every plan year

    Certify for Medicare

To sell Medicare Advantage and Part D plans with us, complete the AHIP Medicare + Fraud, Waste, and Abuse course for the current plan year (AHIP updates it every year), plus each carrier's certification.

  7. Every plan year

Register with CMS for ACA plans

Complete Marketplace registration and training with CMS each plan year through the Marketplace Learning Management System (MLMS). Ohio uses HealthCare.gov, so this is the registration that lets you enroll Ohio residents in marketplace plans. CMS ties Marketplace access to the health line of authority on your resident license, so your Ohio license comes first.

  8. Keep your license active

To renew, Ohio requires 24 hours of continuing education every 2 years, including 3 hours of ethics.

Also good to know in Ohio: Your course completion certificate is valid for 180 days, and you must pass the exam within that time.
