Why California agents stay busy

For 2027 coverage, California runs its own exchange, Covered California, instead of HealthCare.gov. Agents who sell its plans register with Covered California too. Agents also complete Covered California's own certification.

The median annual wage for insurance sales agents in California was $76,120 in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That figure covers every kind of insurance agent and employer in the state, so read it as a picture of the local market, not as pay at My Live Health. Our pay is commission, paid every week.

About 28.8% of California residents speak Spanish at home (Census Bureau ACS 2024 1-year, table C16001).

How to get licensed in California

The California Department of Insurance licenses insurance agents in California. Here is the path to a resident license that covers health insurance, then the steps to sell Medicare and ACA plans.

  1. Resident license

    Get the right license line

In California, the resident license that lets you sell health insurance is Accident and Health or Sickness Agent. The California Department of Insurance issues it.

  2. 12 hours

    Complete pre-licensing education

California requires 12 hours of pre-licensing education on ethics and the California Insurance Code, done before the license is issued.

  3. PSI

    Pass the state exam

In California, insurance licensing exams are run by PSI. You schedule your health line exam with them.

  4. Required

    Get fingerprinted

California requires fingerprints for a background check by Live Scan through Capital Live Scan after you submit your application.

  5. Apply for your license

Apply for your California resident license through NIPR or Sircon. You receive your National Producer Number (NPN), a unique ID that follows you to every state, during the application process.

  6. Every plan year

    Certify for Medicare

To sell Medicare Advantage and Part D plans with us, complete the AHIP Medicare + Fraud, Waste, and Abuse course for the current plan year (AHIP updates it every year), plus each carrier's certification.

  7. Every plan year

Register with CMS for ACA plans

Complete Marketplace registration and training with CMS each plan year through the Marketplace Learning Management System (MLMS). You need this for HealthCare.gov states, which you reach with non-resident licenses. CMS ties Marketplace access to the health line of authority on your resident license, so your California license comes first.

  8. State exchange

    Register with Covered California

For 2027 coverage, California runs its own exchange, Covered California, instead of HealthCare.gov. Agents register with Covered California as well. Agents also complete Covered California's own certification.

  9. Keep your license active

To renew, California requires 24 hours of continuing education every 2 years, including 3 hours of ethics with 1 hour on insurance fraud.

Also good to know in California: Applying for Life and Accident and Health or Sickness at the same time costs one $188 filing fee.
